Yes! We made it to Parnassus's 300th LP catalog!
Actually, we've done
quite a few more catalogs than that. Since we split off our CD catalog,
we've done 39 of those, plus 2 jazz catalogs (a failed project!),
11 "Prime" catalogs (higher priced records which hardly exist any more),
2 special order CDR catalogs, and possibly even a few others we've forgotten.
So let's say this is at least our 350th catalog. At any rate,
it's a milestone which as far as we know has been reached by no other record dealer.
Of course, if it weren't for our customers, we wouldn't be here. Some of you may
remember the time five years ago when we had a close-out/moving sale and nearly wound
up going out of the LP business altogether. Fortunately, it didn't happen, and we're
expecting to be here for the forseeable future. Nancy (our Office Manager),
Mark (our Webmaster and Lord High Everything Else), Susan (our Packer and Shipper)
and I (Leslie) are all extremely appreciative of your support.
As you may know, LP sales are declining overall (prices certainly are!), and our LP business is
falling off a bit, but not enough to make us quit. If our customers have any
suggestions for how we might improve our business or dealings, we will receive them
with great gratitude.
To celebrate our 300th LP catalog we are holding a
CONTEST
Some years
ago we held an "Acoustics to Stereo" contest, in which you were asked to
list performers who had made recordings by the acoustical process and in
genuine stereo. Now, moving into the future, the contest task is to name as many performers
as you can who fit the description: "78s to Digital".
Here are the rules:
- 1. Only "classical" music (including opera) will be counted.
- 2. Performers must have made recordings on shellac 78s, and by the
digital process. The 78s cannot be special late issues on vinyl (so
Roberto Alagna doesn't make the list). The digital recordings can have
been issued on either LP or CD (or both), but CD reissues of analog
recordings do not count.
- 3. The performers must be individuals who received or should have
received label credit. For example, orchestras or members of orchestras
do not count. Members of string quartets or wind quintets do count.
- 4. In case of names we question, compilers of lists must be able to
substantiate their entries with labels and catalog numbers of
recordings.
- 5. Rulings of the judge (Leslie Gerber) will be more or less final, but
we will consider reasonable appeals of individual items.
- 6. In the event of a tie, the two prizes will be added and split evenly between the winners.
FIRST PRIZE IS A $300 CREDIT WITH PARNASSUS
SECOND PRIZE IS A $100 CREDIT WITH PARNASSUS
THIRD PRIZE IS A $50 CREDIT WITH PARNASSUS
